🚤 Gingerbread Man’s Paddle Boat: A STEAM Adventure at Mariner Montessori
/As we wrapped up the year and welcomed the new one, our Explorer 3 students at Mariner Montessori Galleria brought a beloved story to life through creativity, engineering, and hands-on discovery.
After reading the classic tale The Gingerbread Man, students explored important themes such as cause and effect, stranger safety, and listening skills through the story’s repetitive language and engaging narrative. But the learning didn’t stop with the book.
Inspired by the Gingerbread Man’s famous river escape, the students asked a big question:
“How can we help the Gingerbread Man cross the river safely?”
That question sparked a creative STEAM challenge — designing and building a paddle boat.
⚙️ Engineering a Paddle Boat
Using simple everyday materials — a water bottle, sticks, plastic spoons, rubber bands, and duct tape — students worked together to engineer a functioning paddle boat.
The boat was powered by a rubber band motor, which introduced students to an exciting scientific concept. By twisting the propeller, the children stored potential energy, and when released in water, that energy transformed into kinetic energy, causing the boat to move forward.
Along the way, students also explored the concept of buoyancy, discovering why some objects float while others sink.
🌟 A Full STEM Learning Experience
This project naturally integrated multiple areas of learning:
• Science – understanding energy and buoyancy
• Technology – exploring how a rubber band motor works
• Engineering – designing and building the paddle boat
• Math – measuring materials, counting twists, and observing travel distance
By combining literacy, science, and creativity, students experienced how different subjects connect in the real world.
đź’ˇ Learning the Mariner Way
This activity perfectly reflects what we call the Mariner DNA — creativity, innovation, and learning through experience.
Through this engaging project, students didn’t just hear a story — they became part of it. They practiced teamwork, problem-solving, and curiosity while transforming a simple classroom moment into a meaningful engineering challenge.
At Mariner Montessori, these kinds of experiences help children develop confidence, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning.
✨ From storybook inspiration to real-world engineering — this is the Mariner way.
