🌟 Creativity Compass Award: March 2026 Winner – STEAM in Action at Mariner Heights 🌟

As part of our ongoing Creativity Compass Award program, we are excited to recognize Infant 3 at Mariner Heights as our March 2026 Creativity Compass Award winner.

This inspiring classroom experience showcased how even our youngest learners can engage in meaningful scientific discovery through hands-on exploration. Through a STEAM activity called "Casting Color Shadows," children explored light, color, and movement using transparent butterfly wings and natural sunlight.

As sunlight passed through the colorful materials, vibrant shadows danced across the floor, sparking curiosity, joy, and wonder. Through movement and observation, children began making connections about how light changes and interacts with the world around them.

This simple yet engaging activity demonstrates that learning does not have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes the most powerful discoveries happen when children are given the opportunity to explore the world around them with their own eyes.

🌈 Discovering Light, Color, and Movement

The activity began with children exploring colorful transparent butterfly wings in natural sunlight. As they moved the materials across the classroom, they noticed beautiful colors appearing on the floor and changing as the light shifted.

Through their exploration, children experienced:

• Casting colorful shadows through transparent materials
• Color recognition and classification
• Cause-and-effect relationships through movement and light

Each new shadow became an opportunity to investigate, observe, and discover.

For our youngest learners, these experiences provide the foundation for future scientific thinking while keeping learning joyful and engaging.

🔍 Early STEAM Learning in Action

At Mariner Montessori, we believe that STEAM education can begin at any age.

This activity introduced early concepts in:

Science : Observing how light interacts with transparent materials and creates colorful shadows.

Technology : Using carefully selected materials as tools for exploration and discovery.

Engineering : Experimenting with different positions and movements to create new effects.

Art : Exploring color, beauty, and visual creativity through light.

Mathematics : Recognizing, comparing, and classifying colors while observing patterns and changes.

By combining these elements, children were able to engage in authentic learning through play.

💡 Supporting the Whole Child

Beyond science and discovery, this activity supported multiple areas of child development.

Sensory Exploration

The vibrant colors and changing shadows provided rich visual stimulation, encouraging children to engage their senses and make observations about their environment.

Social-Emotional Growth

The excitement and wonder generated by the activity created opportunities for shared experiences, communication, and joyful interactions with peers and teachers.

Early Scientific Thinking

As children observed how colors changed based on movement and position, they began developing foundational skills in observation, prediction, and cause-and-effect reasoning.

🌱 Learning the Mariner Way

At Mariner Montessori, we believe meaningful learning happens when children are encouraged to explore, discover, and wonder.

Activities like Casting Color Shadows embody what we call the Mariner DNA — creativity, innovation, and learning through hands-on experiences. By providing opportunities for children to investigate the world around them, we nurture curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

This project beautifully demonstrated how simple materials and thoughtful planning can create powerful learning experiences for even our youngest students.
